The location
Santa Maria di Leuca is 130km far from the Salento Airport in Brindisi and 90km from Lecce.
At the extreme tip of Apulia and of the Italy, stands Santa Maria di Leuca. The promontory of Leuca has ancient origins. In fact, some research has confirmed that this territory has been frequented by the Neanderthal man. Evidence of his passage has been found in the caves of the Devil, the Giant and the Child.
In addition, also in Santa Maria di Leuca, existed a village dating back to the Bronze and the Iron Age located approximately in the area of the present Sanctuary. A long time before came up a pagan temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, the Minerva of the Romans, of which the historian Strabone speaks too. The temple, in fact, was visible to sailors even from miles away, and aroused a certain fear. According to others, instead, the pagan temple was the coastal sanctuary of Grotta Porcinara, still present in Leuca, but guarded behind a grate that prevents access.
The lighthouse of Santa Maria di Leuca and the monumental waterfall
Leuca is very famous for the lighthouse too of Santa Maria of Leuca in its 48.6 meters. The lighthouse is located 102 meters above sea level, on the promontory of Punta Meliso. Its beam of light, in optimal weather conditions, is visible even over 40 kilometers. Descending from the promontory of Punta Meliso, by means of a double staircase leading to the old fishing port, you will pass by the Monumental Waterfall of the Apulian Aqueduct, that is the precise point at which the Aqueduct ends. Since 2015 the waterfall is equipped with an artistic lighting system and is open with regular appointments that represent a fascinating and suggestive show for all tourists on holiday in Salento.
